In May 2016, our friends at the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center of San Francisco (APICC) will present its 19th annual festival, the United States of Asian America Festival 2016 (USAAF): Civil Dis(place)ment. The events presented during the United States of Asian America Festival (USAAF) will highlight various mediums of art and culture including theater, storytelling, stand-up comedy, dance, performance art, solo performance, literary, culinary, panel discussion, workshop, music, visual art exhibition, performance poetry, film, spoken word, variety showcase, multimedia productions and multi-art productions.
This year, we’re thrilled to co-present and be part of the USAAF 2016 program Cinematic SF: Community Preview on Thursday, May 12, 2016, at the Ninth Street Independent Film Center screening room.
“Albeit a constantly evolving landscape, San Francisco remains a city rich with character, culture and conflict. To capture the untold stories of San Francisco’s underserved and underrepresented communities caught in such conflict, the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center will be commissioning a collection of locally made short films and creating a cinematic mural of the enduring experiences SF residents most challenged by a myriad of social inequities and obstacles.” - APICC’s website
The featured filmmakers include Elizabeth Lo, R.J. Lozada, Abhi Singh, and Jimmy Zhang. This special community preview will include a screening of the filmmakers’ past work, an opportunity for guests to meet and chat with the filmmakers and a discussion of the filmmakers’ upcoming efforts to film the vivid and yet contradictory place and culture that is San Francisco. CAAM’s Festival and Exhibitions Director Masashi Niwano will moderate the discussion.
